Prison Song
Recorded by:

From the Album:
Revenge is Never a Four Letter Word
Lyrics and notesIn so many cells across so many states, so many are doing their time
while we hear these myths about rehab as if these structures were reducing crime.
Incarceration and the rate of crime, the correlation just ain't there
but it sends out a message to the dispossessed, telling them all to beware.
And you can ignore the real problems
settle for what they say
but for those behind bars, these lies are so far
from what they know is reality.
Well they'll throw you away because of your class or race
so often in the name of the bill ($)
as colleges take towns, the poor are dragged out
to prisons while these landlords get their fill.
And as prison-administered factories are used to exploit the labors of those locked away
those who make bars and the food and the beds use this P.I.C.* scam to get their pay
And you can ignore the real problems
settle for the P.I.C.
but it's pretty clear
there'll be no justice here
until all the captive are free.
From outside you can't tell, but the inside is hell as prisoners are subject to pain
because of who they are, not the crimes they commit, though it's injustice all the same
Female and colored and transgendered prisoners are subject to biased abuse
while festering in cells with deplorable health, the mental anguish is profuse.
And if you don't think that prisons are problems
you'd better think again
and for the good of us all
may they all one day fall
and delight the world with their decay.
