Walking Down the Road
Recorded by:
Ryan Williams
From the Album:
Build What You Want To See
Lyrics and notesWalking from the bus stop over the bridge covered in ice
wind blowing snow in my eyes and all I see is white
I'm walking through the park again, my boss' house in sight
Exhaling smoke and steam, I walk and think about my life.
I never thought I'd be here working week to week for debt
babysitting and cleaning houses, scrounging just to pay the rent
and student loans and bus fare, borrowing against the next week's check
No, I never thought I'd be here but it's the path that I have set.
CHORUS:
And through struggle I find sorrow but I also find my hope
I know I'm not the only one with troubles, no, I don't feel alone
and even though the wind bites my nose and chills the blood that flows through these bones
I will just keep walking down this road.
My parents moved to the suburbs to give me the life they never had
They gave me everything they could and tried to put me on a path
that led to security, where I could be doing whatever I pleased
but what I saw on my journey made me realize that this path wasn't for me.
Everywhere I looked around I saw that things didn't seem right
I saw rich bosses fighting workers while the workers fought just to get by
I saw the bombs fall on Afghanistan and Iraq while I slept safe at night
and in the morning I went to work to make sure they had the best weapons for the fight.
So I dropped out of college, quit my job, and moved out of my parents' house
I didn't know what I would do with my life and I still don't quite know now
and though I'm naive, I can see more clear what I want from this life
that's to love and build connections as we strive to make things right.
